D&P news and project updates

Donor wall design featured in KUT video profile

Dyal and Partners’ donor recognition installation will add a richly historical and immersive presence to the new KUT Public Media Studios.

D&P’s Design Principal Herman Dyal was featured in a KUT video profile discussing the firm’s design for the donor wall. The wall, which will recognize supporters who donate to KUT’s May Capital Campaign (held May 7th thru 11th) is to be installed around Studio 1B, or, “the heart of the station.”

We wanted to create an engaging permanent installation that would bear significant meaning to KUT and its supporters. The assemblage of archival material from KUT’s 50-year history alongside the donors’ names emphasizes the role that supporters play in the spirit and community of KUT.

Dyal and Partners to re-brand the Blanton Museum of Art

from http://blantonstudentguild.wordpress.com/

Dyal and Partners was recently selected to lead a re-branding initiative for the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas.

We will provide comprehensive strategy and design services related to the museum’s re-positioning and re-branding effort. Our services focus on the visual identity and personality of the Blanton and its related programs, as well as the implementation of the new identity into the full range of collateral materials, promotional items, environmental graphics and signage.

The Blanton has the largest and most inclusive art collection in Central Texas and serves as a significant asset to both the university and the Austin community. The museum’s impressive permanent collection includes more than 17,000 European, Latin American, and contemporary American pieces.

“We are honored to be working with the Blanton leadership on this very exciting project,” D&P Design Principal Herman Dyal says of the commission. “The Blanton is an extraordinary resource and we look forward to helping build its presence and promote its mission to the Austin community and beyond.”

Dyal and Partners’ new studio

We are pleased to announce that Dyal and Partners has moved our studio to a new location. The firm purchased a space in Cambridge Tower, a 1960′s building that was recently recognized as a distinguished historical building by the Mid Tex Mod. Located on the edge of the University of Texas campus, the residential tower has commercial spaces on the ground level.

We transformed the space– originally a swanky French restaurant and later a typical office space– into an open, modern studio. Once we stripped away the dropped ceilings and the interior walls, we discovered nice concrete decking on the ceiling and left the spacious, light-filled area mostly open. We are still completing the last details and are finding the studio to be conducive to creative collaboration.

We look forward to continuing to produce work in our new location and to having wonderful university resources available to us just across the street and downtown Austin just a short bicycle ride away.

Our new address is 1801 Lavaca, Suite 115, Austin, TX 78701.

D&P working with KUT

Dyal and Partners is excited and honored to be engaged in the development of specialty design elements for the future home of KUT, Austin’s listener-supported radio station.

The station is moving into the west wing of the new Belo Center for New Media at the University of Texas—a building they will share with the university’s College of Communications. The building, designed by Lawrence Group Austin is under construction now and will open Summer 2012.

Our work for the KUT space includes the design of a large-scale donor recognition piece, branded placemaking elements and entrance banners promoting KUT Music and News.

We are developing concepts for an informative and engaging donor recognition piece to be installed at the “heart of the station;” an architectural element in the center of the KUT space that will encompass the station’s recording studio.

Take a tour of the Belo Center.

D&P tours the Belo Center construction Site

Dyal and Partners visited the construction site of the Belo Center for New Media to get an insider’s look at the building’s progress.

Our team designed wayfinding elements, donor recognition pieces, an exhibit honoring Pulitzer Prize winners from UT, and an honorific wall that will be visible from Dean Keaton Street, honoring third-generation Belo Corp. leaders for their role at the Belo Foundation.

Earl Swisher AIA, Principal at Lawrence Group Austin and Design Principal for the Belo Center for New Media, led the Dyal team on a tour of the new 5-story building, which will expand the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Communications.

Opening in Fall 2012, the lecture halls and classrooms in the Belo Center were designed to accommodate sound and video equipment, allowing students to fully participate in new media exercises. The Belo Center will also be home to Austin’s listener-supported radio station KUT, which will be a learning tool in itself, as KUT’s glass walls will allow for students and passersby to observe radio interviews and see the newsroom in action.

The Belo Center is located at the intersection of Guadalupe and Dean Keaton Street and will be a valuable resource for the university when it opens in Fall 2012. We are pleased to be involved in this project in our own community.

New project in Poland

Dyal and Partners has just begun design work for Galeria Bronowice, a retail project in Krakow, Poland.

Herman Dyal traveled to Poland last week where he met with architects Bose International and developer Immochan. Dyal toured the project site and led a kick-off work session in which the team discussed concept and design directions for the project’s identity and logo.

Dyal and Partners is now in the initial design development phase, working to produce graphics, logo and design materials for Galeria Bronowice. The project will be two levels with 160 fashion and dining tenants, including Auchan, a popoular shopping center with over 300 locations in Europe and Asia.

A grand opening of Galeria Bronowice is planned for 2013.

Texas Society of Architects refreshes website

As part of the  Herman Dyal led re-branding initiative, the Texas Society of Architects’ website got a total revamp.

Austin-based web designers Elemental Blend led the re-design and Dyal and Partners served as consultants on the redesign.

Dyal and Partners is wrapping up the re-design of the Texas Architect magazine and looks forward to seeing the new designs implemented in the 2012 January/February issue.

D&P’s work on Mosaic continues

Dyal and Partners is involved in concept, identity and design development for a large-scale multi-use center in Fairfax County, VA.

Located just outside of Washington D.C., the 1,900,000 square-foot Mosaic will have a rich and diverse assortment of retail, residential, and hotel and office spaces.

Project Designer Roy Watson and team have been working on designs to effectively communicate Mosaic’s vision, image and brand. Our scope began with identity and brand mark and extended further to include place-making and environmental elements, as we created an overall design vocabulary and standard for the project, as well as identity graphics and design materials.

Developer Edens & Avant anticipates a grand opening in Fall 2012.

Fraser joins the board of Art Alliance Austin

Dyal and Partners Managing Principal Carla Fraser recently joined the Board of Art Alliance Austin.

A non-profit organization established in 1956, Art Alliance Austin strives to engage people with great art by supporting Austin’s talented artists and arts organizations to sustain an informed and vibrant community.

Fraser says she looks forward to working with the organization’s leadership and the board to achieve its mission.

“I want to be engaged with bringing more of the great talent found in Austin’s artist community to a wider public,” she says.

As co-founder of Pecha Kucha Night Austin, Fraser credits Art Alliance in its role as a facilitator and logistics sponsor for some of Pecha Kucha’s success when she and Herman Dyal were introducing the event to the city.

“Without the commitment from Art Alliance, it would have been nearly impossible to carry on the Pecha Kucha events,” Fraser says. “We were able to focus on bringing together the best presenters to share their work with our audience, and Art Alliance got us into fun, unique and accommodating venues.”

Pecha Kucha Night Austin is one of several events that Art Alliance Austin will sponsor in 2012, along with Art Night Austin, Art City Austin, and Art Week Austin.

Principal of Vision Corporation John R. Fleming joins Fraser as a new addition to the board, which is now comprised of ten members.
